Back for more Buns From Home
Emerging from life in lockdown, Buns From Home began in its founder’s mother’s kitchen… meaning the first of its customers were some very lucky neighbours.
Soon enough, word (or perhaps deliciously buttery scent) got out and the first physical Buns From Home bakery opened its doors on Portobello Road, with a second Holland Park Avenue space closely following.
And the bun buffs weren’t stopping there, having most recently opened not one but two new sites in the heart of Covent Garden as well as the iconic Royal Exchange.
After a week of walking past their Covent Garden shopfront, I made sure my Saturday breakfast involved one of their buns. I opted for the classic cinnamon, and tried a bite of its cardamom sister. Crisp around the outside, soft and chewy in the middle, sticky with sweet cinnamon glaze all over. As it happened, my Sunday breakfast involved the very same thing…
Butter from Normandy is the key ingredient within their recipe, and all of the buns are proudly handmade. You can watch them being prepared by the team behind the counter – a therapeutic exercise.
There are (thankfully for me with my newfound addiction) always regulars on the menu like the signature cinnamon bun, as well as its cardamom or chocolate and hazelnut variations… but the fun doesn’t stop there. Each weekend they also have specials, like an ode to the Snickers bar or a take on lemon and poppyseed pie. You’ll find some savoury options for the less sweet-toothed too, as well as vegan equivalents of their staples.
Same again next weekend? I needn’t answer.
