Five of the best restaurants in Bath

A city famed for its Georgian architecture, Roman Baths and cobbled streets, there’s a lot to love about Bath… including its restaurant scene. Brimming with brilliant spots, from charming little bistros to fine-dining favourites, read on for a few of the best restaurants in Bath worth visiting when you’re next in town.

Beckford Canteen

Set within a Georgian greenhouse along Bartlett Street, Beckford Canteen is an elegant but relaxed restaurant filled with natural light and the gentle buzz of diners. The concise and well-curated menu is a celebration of modern British cuisine, with provenance and seasonality at the core of each dish. Signatures include the rarebit crumpet with pickled onion, while the confit potatoes are a side dish of dreams. Make sure to ask your waiter for the daily specials too.

11-12 Bartlett Street

Upstairs at Landrace

Head through the fabulous Landrace bakery and up a set of narrow wooden stairs to the aptly named restaurant, Upstairs at Landrace. A bit of East London in Bath, it’s all chalkboard menus, pared-back wooden furniture and fun posters framed along the walls. The restaurant is the brainchild of Landrace founder, Andrew Lowkes together with Rob and Jules Sachdev, formerly of Quality Chop, Brawn and Jolene between them. Inspired by relaxed European bistros, the menu features seasonal small plates, rustic pastas and hearty meat dishes, alongside a great selection of wines.

61B Walcot Street

Henry’s

One of the best restaurants in Bath for fine-dining, Henry’s is a sophisticated spot along Savile Row if you’re looking for somewhere to celebrate or to mark a special occasion. Tasting menus are the prime feature here – guests can choose between five or seven courses, all of which are made up of ingredients that celebrate Bath and the wider Southwest region.

Bosco

When I lived in Bath a few years ago, I would (all too) often travel to nearby Bristol for a taste of one of Bosco’s pizzas. So on hearing the news that the team were opening a restaurant in Bath, I seriously considered moving back. When it comes to the menu, Bosco’s pizzas reign supreme – from the simple but superb Margherita to the wondrous Porchetta Bianca – but there’s a great selection of pastas, salads and antipasti to choose from too.

MIlsom Place

The Olive Tree

The only restaurant in Bath with a Michelin Star to its name, The Olive Tree is also one the city’s longest-standing establishments. Chris Cleghorn heads up the kitchen to produce a menu with seasonality and British produce at its heart. Choose from one of the restaurant’s tasting menus, from the signature ‘Nine’ to a shorter three-course lunchtime option.

4-7 Russell Street

Beckford Bottle Shop

A go-to amongst visitors and locals alike for its excellent selection of wines and small plates, Beckford Bottle Shop is the perfect option whether you’re looking for a quick bite or wanting to while away the afternoon over a leisurely lunch. Inside, charm exudes from one nook to the next – whether you’re sat in the main dining area or on a counter seat at the window watching the world go by. On a summer’s day, opt for an outdoor table and order a bottle of sparkling rosé. There really is nothing better.
